SEPTA Resource Fair - Honoring Disability History and Awareness Month

Picture
On July 12, 2011 Governor Jay Nixon signed a very important piece of legislation that mandated several changes for disability rights. House bills 555 and 648 effectively removed the term "mental retardation" from state statutes - and served to officially designate October as Disability History and Awareness Month! In his press release on this memorable day, Governor Nixon was quoted as saying, "More than 100,000 Missourians have an intellectual or developmental disability, and many more have a family member with a disability. This legislation helps to ensure that, as a state, our words, actions and laws do not promote discrimination. Words that are hurtful or hateful have no place on our books or in our hearts. This legislation is about dignity, practicality and the need to ensure access and equality for Missourians with disabilities."

In honor of disability awareness month SEPTA is hosting its annual resource fair. The SEPTA Resource Fair is a great opportunity for members of the disability community to make personal connections by networking and sharing information about their organizations with each other, the general public, and most importantly - with those they serve! SEPTA would like to thank The Arc of the Ozarks for sponsoring this event in their facility. How fitting that this event will be hosted at The Arc of Ozarks, an organization that has been committed to serving people with disabilities for over forty years!

There is no fee to participate in this event, however donations
are accepted and will go to support the SEPTA mission to provide support for parents and children with special needs in public schools. If you need additional accomodations, when you register (scroll down to bottom of page) please provide this information in the comment section.

We look forward to seeing you at the fair!
